IS IT FAST ?
Yes , it ’ s very fast but that statement needs some clarification .
According to Starlink , most users will achieve download speeds of between 25 and 200 megabits per second ( MBPS ). If you check out the various Starlink user groups on Facebook , most seem to get around 100-150MBPS . I ’ ve experienced download speeds as low as 40MBPS and as high as 220MBPS . My average is about 150MBPS . When you compare that to a standard NBN home plan that maxes out at 50MBPS , it ’ s clear that Starlink is very fast even on a bad day .
Now , I know there will be people saying that mobile broadband , either 4G or 5G , offers speeds at least equal to or better than Starlink , and that may be true . In reality , the actual performance you experience , more often than not , falls well below the telcos ’ claims .
Starlink ’ s performance is infinitely more consistent . Data upload speeds are between 5 and 30MBPS , and that has worried me a bit , especially for uploading images or teleconferencing but , in practice , this doesn ’ t seem to translate to poor performance .
Thanks to Starlink , this can be my view from the office every day .
Thanks to someone ' s misfortune , we can have a look at the phased antenna array on the surface of the dish .
Latency , which may be important to gamers , can vary greatly between 60 and 160 milliseconds .
At the end of the day , these speed tests are largely academic . What matters is real-world performance . We can stream HD video on two smart TVs and surf the net or do our social media catch-ups on two other devices simultaneously without any problems whatsoever . Compared to our previous experience with 4G or 5G , where we often had issues streaming to just one device , Starlink is a clear winner .
