TRAVELS WITH KINGDEANO ADVENTURES
Like many Australians imagine doing , recently our friends , Laura and Rob , took a leap of faith , bought a caravan and quit their jobs to do a Big Lap for a year . To send them on their way , some friends and we thought we ’ d send Laura and Rob off in their last Victoria town of Portland . Ironically , Portland was also the town where we purchased our campervan four years ago .
As we had dogs , for this stay we booked our sites at the petfriendly Holiday Lifestyle Caravan Park , which was about five minutes from town . On our first morning , we headed into town and enjoyed breakfast at the petfriendly café , Bahloo , which had plenty of outdoor seating . After a lazy breakfast with a view , we took a walk along the boardwalk and checked out the fishing boats . There was the mandatory fish & chip food van at the wharf and Adam couldn ’ t help himself and ordered some fried fish .
After taking in the wharf , we took a short drive from town to visit Nelson Lighthouse , with many wind farms along the way . Unfortunately , the lighthouse wasn ’ t pet-friendly , so we took turns visiting the site . The lighthouse provided glorious ocean views of the coastal area .
We then visited Portland Botanical Gardens and meandered around the gardens . While there , we came across a beautiful old bluestone cottage from 1854 that was originally the caretaker ’ s residence . The cottage had been turned into a museum that you could visit for a small fee . As we left the gardens , we noticed there was the Portland community tram stop , which provides a hop-onhop-off service , taking you to the tourist sites of Portland .
