TRAVELS WITH KINGDEANO ADVENTURES
We stopped for lunch at The Gordon Pub on the main street in town , and then made our way to the Maritime Discovery Centre , which we learned also provided information about what you can do in the area . A feature of the centre was the skeleton of a sperm whale . The whale had washed up on the Portland shore in 1987 . They displayed a shark hanging from the ceiling and many local maritime stories and artifacts . After our visit , we returned to the holiday park to enjoy some fish and chips that we picked up in town and enjoyed a bottle of wine to celebrate the beginning of our friends ’ journey .
The following morning , we said our farewell to Laura , Rob and their dog , Dusty , and we headed back into town to wander through the Portland Community Market , held on the foreshore . Like any good town market , there was a variety of stalls , including homebaked goods and clothing . We picked up a winter jacket for our dog , Twyla , handmade by a local .
Across the shore , we could see the Portland timber yards where they load the ships with lumber . The scent of wood chips was in the air .
Our last stop before making our way home was the water tower , which was converted into a museum and lookout tower . The World War II memorial features interesting local military history and spectacular views of the area . The tower isn ’ t pet-friendly , so we took turns visiting . If you don ’ t mind walking a few stairs , this is a great attraction .
I feel we just touched the surface of what Portland has to offer . If it was the right season , it would have been fantastic to go out for whale watching , but we ’ ll have to put that on our list for a return visit .
We would like to wish our readers a safe and happy Christmas and New Year ’ s . We ’ ll see you in the New Year and look forward to sharing many more adventures with you .
