TRAVELS WITH KINGDEANO ADVENTURES
You ' re not alone if you ’ ve heard of Hipcamp but never tried it ! We were recently looking for a quick escape from Melbourne so we figured we ' d explore somewhere nearby for a one-night camping trip . After downloading the Hipcamp app , we found a hidden gem : Dromkeen in Riddells Creek , located in the Macedon Ranges , Vic . This Heritage-listed homestead was exactly what we were after !
Dromkeen Homestead isn ’ t your average camping spot . It ’ s the former estate of Judge Arthur Chomley , built in 1889 , and it later became home to the renowned Dromkeen Picture Book Art Collection . The property boasts gardens filled with both Australian native and European plants , a peaceful gazebo and even two adorable alpacas that call the homestead home .
What sold us on this spot was the option to camp in the horse paddock , which offered the most breathtaking views of rolling hills . It was the ideal setting for a peaceful evening , where we cooked dinner outside while soaking in that incredible sunset , and we didn ' t do much else – we relaxed , enjoyed the quiet , and took it all in .
The next morning , we headed to the Dromkeen Homestead to check out its heritage-listed building . The homestead currently has an illustration art gallery that focuses on children ’ s art and literature . At the time , there was a beautiful exhibition featuring works by Australian authors and illustrators . After viewing the gallery , we enjoyed some coffee and freshly baked scones with jam and cream from the Homestead Tea Room . We opted to sit in the sunroom , which was bright and airy – a perfect spot to enjoy the surroundings .
