A day or two prior, the lead instructor for Isuzu’ s i-Venture 4WD club, Matt Taylor, had established an offroad route around Black Duck Valley. He was confident the MY25 Isuzu MU-Xs, with their highway terrain tyres, standard suspension and ground clearance, could clear all obstacles – including the gully before me.
NEW FOR 2025
Many of the changes found on the MY25 MU-X were first revealed on the 2024 D-MAX. The engine and transmission haven’ t changed, but aspects of the body shape and the‘ intelligence’ of the vehicle have.
First, the MU-X is now available in X-Terrain format, hitherto found only on the D-MAX, as the vehicle’ s top-end package option. If you want an MU-X with all the fruit, that’ s the one you’ d choose.
While it’ s true the changes to the car are beyond skin deep, there have indeed been sheetmetal changes. Among the aesthetic changes are a new bonnet design, a‘ soft nose’ design, a new grille design( I particularly liked the grille found on the X-Terrain), revised headlight designs with low-beam range increased to 112m and the light‘ tuned’ to the left shoulder of the road in order to better illuminate the road verge.
The combined taillights have been reshaped too, and according to Isuzu, they are also brighter and react faster to driver input.
At Isuzu’ s press briefing, we were told about the hexapod‘ design language’ as well as certain aeronautical design cues that inform the interior and exterior of the new-look MU-X. They changes are subtle but modern. I particularly liked the rear‘ spoiler’, an angular protrusion on the tailgate. Overall, it still looks like an MU-X, just updated to look sleeker and more modern.
