Looking up the climb to the summit of Bald Rock, I was questioning my life choices …
Now, if both Mt Augustus and Uluru are a bit out of the way for your current holiday, there are plenty of other notable large rocks that you can visit in other states. Mt Arapiles in Victoria comes to mind. Pildappa Rock on South Australia’ s Eyre Peninsula is another very impressive landmark. But I reckon my favourite would be Bald Rock, which is big enough to have its own national park. It sits close to the New South Wales and Queensland border near the popular tourist township of Tenterfield.
Bald Rock is so different to most other big rocks in Australia. For a start, it is surrounded by lush green vegetation, and the rock face has many different colours. You can climb Bald Rock relatively easily, and the views of the surrounding hills from the summit are breathtaking.
THE TALLEST MANMADE STRUCTURE?
What is the tallest manmade structure in Australia? Ask this question around happy hour at the caravan park, and I’ ll bet it starts a lively debate. The Victorians will claim Australia 108 is the tallest, and they’ d be wrong. The New South Welshman will claim Sydney Tower, which is not even close. And the Queenslanders will claim with confidence it’ s the Q1 Tower on the Gold Coast, and yet they would be wrong too … technically.
