You see, while the Q1 Tower can lay claim to being Australia’ s tallest building at 322m, the nation’ s tallest structure, rising 389m above the ground, is Mast Zero VLF transmission tower at the Naval Communications Station Harold E. Holt in Exmouth, WA. This massive complex provides very low frequency( VLF) radio communications to the Australian and American naval fleets in the Pacific and Indian oceans. There are 13 towers in all at the base, each standing over 300m tall.
Sunsets at Lake Argyle are spectacular.
THE LARGEST LAKE?
To be fair, it is a bit of a trick question to ask what is the largest lake in this country because lakes can be graded in a variety of ways. If you’ re talking about area, Australia’ s largest lake is Lake Eyre / Kati Thanda, which stretches over 9000 square kilometres. The problem is that it is a dry lake for most of the time, only filling with water once every 11 years or so. Lake Eyre flooded following colossal rainfall in Queensland in April this year. If you go there today, you may be lucky enough to see it with some water still in it.
When it comes to the amount of water they hold, particularly fresh water, the title goes to Lake Argyle, WA. Created by the damming of the Ord River in 1971, Lake Argyle can hold a maximum of 10,763 gigalitres of water. By some estimates, that’ s over 20 times more than Sydney Harbour. It’ s a mind-boggling amount of water.
The dam wall at Lake Argyle is tiny given the amount of water it holds back.
