Interestingly, during my visit, I discovered that Hilltop had two electrical contractors on staff who worked exclusively for Hilltop.
As Dam said, having the same electricians wire his vans means repeatability and reliability in the work that is done. I also discovered that Hilltop takes detailed pictures of each van during the various construction stages so that there are visual references on file for each van, should work need to be done on any particular van in the future.
While I don ' t envy the time and expense involved in moving their CNC router from the old factory to the new, I can appreciate the result that this piece of machinery provides. But there is a little more to Hilltop’ s furniture. You see, Dam worked for a different caravan manufacturer for six years before Hilltop was born. He remembers the days of hand-building furniture from ply and meranti timber well, before CNC machines became the norm in caravan factories.
Because he therefore appreciates the strength of meranti for furniture construction, he uses it to reinforce the CNC-cut ply furniture carcasses. In that sense, he views Hilltop’ s furniture as blending the old with the new, though your eye would never know that meranti timber was involved – the internal furniture looks clean, modern and classy.
