As if that’ s not enough, the couple decided to extend their van’ s awning, as the one that came with their pop-top didn’ t quite cover the barbecue area, which made cooking in inclement weather less than ideal. Their solution: shape and then fix a piece of checkerplate to the leading edge of the van to act as an additional securing point for a longer awning. But the clever side benefit, which Rowan and Emma are particularly pleased about, is that the checkerplate extension acts as a shield against sideways-driven rain, not to mention wind, when they’ re at the barbecue.

Over a beer or two, Aus RV XL13 owners Cain and Katrina gave me the grand tour of their van. Aus RV, by the way, is a brand that operates under the Market Direct Group umbrella. In any case, Cain described this mod as his‘ masterpiece’ – and it’ s decidedly simple in its brilliance.
