Speaking of driving in the bush , the vehicle has Rough Terrain Mode , a traction control aid that maximises torque transfer and drivability in technical , slippery and rough conditions . When wheel slip is detected , it finally modulates braking force to individual wheels , proportioning torque to the wheels with the most traction , with little to no loss of momentum .
WEIGHTS AND TOWING
The D-MAX LS-U + weighs 2110kg unladen , has a Gross Vehicle Mass of 3100kg , a Gross Combined Mass of 6000kg , and can tow up to 3500kg with 350kg on the towbar . A quick calculation shows , however , that if you were to tow a van loaded to its 3500kg Aggregate Trailer Mass , in-vehicle payload would be reduced to 390kg . Something to be mindful of but not , in my opinion , a deal-breaker .
When I hitched up the van I mentioned earlier , the rear of the vehicle sagged just a little on its leaf-springs , but the vehicle acquitted itself well . Even towing 3000kg , the 3L turbodiesel engine ( which makes a healthy 450Nm of torque at 1600-2500rpm ) didn ’ t need to dig too deep to keep up with freeway traffic , and towing at speed , the vehicle felt well-planted to the road . The transmission smoothly kicks down when its time to give the accelerator a nudge , and while the engine did forage a little when towing that weight up steep inclines , it was nothing unexpected . The engine remains responsive , too . The Uphill / Downhill Transmission Control feature holds its gear in varied-gradient ascents , and selects the appropriate gear for steep descents to hold speed with engine braking .
